Captured on the incredible night of 11th May 2024 - arguably the best night of Northern Lights the UK has ever seen. I travelled to Askam-in-Furness in Cumbria where the sky absolutely exploded with light and colour in every direction. The old, rusting boat made a terrific foreground. This remains one of my favourite ever shots.
When aurora hits in the UK, it’s normally seen on the northern horizon. But on May 11th 2024, arguably the best Northern Lights display the UK has seen hit with a combination of Coronal Mas Ejections from the sun combining to produce a G5 storm. This meant aurora was visible right across the sky in all directions like you may see in Iceland - and right above me was the corona pulsating with bright colours… an incredible sight to the naked eye. Taken in Askam-in-Furness, Cumbria.
It’s unusual to get this place to yourself. Over the years, more and more people are beginning to gather here when the aurora is predicted to show. Some people sit in the car park with their lights on, spoiling the show for everyone who’s turned out for the Northern Lights. In September 2023, I took a chance and found Jubilee Tower near Quernmore in Lancashire totally deserted. It was a gorgeous display and this remains one of my favourite pictures.
I captured this image of the aurora turning the skies above a barn in Lancashire bright shades of red and green during a very strong aurora display in October 2024. I was due to fly to Iceland just a few weeks later, hoping to see nights like this, so I couldn’t quite believe I was seeing the Northern Lights like this in the UK.
